Digital Leadership in Higher Education

The issue “digital leadership” in higher education (HE) is challenging in two ways: Firstly, it is unclear whether we talk about the concepts of “digital leadership” or rather those of “leadership in the digital age”. Secondly, it is an urgent topic: An increasing number of higher education institutions (HEIs) are involved in permanent change processes. This leads to their managers struggling to build and implement a coherent strategy for the institutions’ digital transformation processes that is also externally visible. Despite managers occupying a key role for successful change processes, surprisingly we have little research on digital transformation processes in HEIs. Whereas other research fields (e.g. management, military) can rely on a rich base of empirical research on the topic of leadership, there is a lack of research for “leadership in education”. Furthermore, only a few attempts exist to date (and to the author’s knowledge) that aim at identifying the dimensions of (good) HE-leadership in the light of the increasing digital pressure for change. The aim of this paper is to conduct a status quo analysis thereby undertaking a first attempt to provide a systematization of potential fields of action. HEIs should pay close attention to these fields to avoid switching back and forth between the various “trending” digital strategies. We present a possible framework for leading the digitalization in an HE context.

Connecting Students with Customized Technology Solutions: Embedding Partnership in a Digital Learning Strategy

Research increasingly suggests that when learners are engaged in shaping and leading strategy, they develop a greater sense of ownership over their learning (Healey et al, 2014). Technology is disrupting (Christensen, 1997) existing educational delivery models, providing more choice for students, for example, through new providers (Edsurge, 2015) and MOOCs having degree credits (University of Leeds, 2016). Developing a digital strategy is an integral part of every leader’s responsibilities. However, there is no universal model or format for developing an e-learning or digital teaching and learning strategy. This paper describes an approach in how to develop a digital strategy in partnership with students. This paper includes observations, findings, examples of good practice and draws upon a wide range of literature. This paper will be useful if we are improving our own digital strategy or if we have not yet started on a strategy. Specifically, I will be looking at why a digital learning strategy is important. This paper argues the benefits to be gained from adopting a more business-like focus to developing a digital learning strategy in partnership with students. I will discuss the collection of key data and fundamental questions to ask, in order, to develop your strategy. The paper lays out a road map to developing and implementing a digital strategy in partnership with students.

Unhinging the Machismo Binary through a Third Space Lens: Reframing Latinx Males Postsecondary Academic Decision-Making

This critical and conceptual analysis problematizes the machismo binary and situates it in a third space framework. It explores Latinx males’ higher education experiences and how machismo influences academic decision-making. Situating Latinx males’ college-going in the third space provides a more nuanced portrayal of their academic decision-making across diverse postsecondary settings. In doing so, the Latinx Gender Identity Development Model for Latinx Males in the Third Space is proposed and connects machismo with other domains such as marianismo, caballerismo and familismo. The proposed framework is illustrated by applying it to Latinx males across critical dimensions that impact their decision-making in the higher education landscape.

So much of our education system today is controlled by targets “getting pupils through exams” accountability everywhere you look. However, this drive for learning facts after facts has meant we have totally alienated students not only from society but from themselves and more importantly their own autonomy/agency in learning - very necessary qualities to effectively succeed in Higher Education. The unexpected arrival of Covid-19 has forced us all to reset and rethink. It has given us additional time to reflect and find out who we are. Many of us have turned to the arts and /humanities. During the lockdown, I have been reading widely – a diverse range of non-pedagogical literature. This has provided me through these writings with some ideas that indicate ways we might create a more holistic educational approach that encourages leadership and global citizenship. This review will describe how art and poetry (in particular Eliot); diverse literatures, creative oral and written communication might be used as tools. The aim is to find ways to stimulate and maintain trust and compassion and advance excellent teaching, leadership and employability skills. It will also illustrate how the use of art and visceral skills may enhance cognition towards deeper more critical thinking and further how these can enhance student emotional self-regulation, confidence and voice. Such strategies can be pivotal in stimulating, enriching and educating towards social justice, equality and diversity when planning to lead courses of national and international students in Higher Education.

Academic Reflections in Times of Crisis: Ten Fading Images of a Fatal Summer

The scholars of the future may be bemused by the academic tribulations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. How will temporal distance affect their understanding of this extraordinary time? What records will be available to them in the next decades and centuries, and how will they extract meaning from qualitative research of the past? Analysis of personal reflections will most likely remain subject to the same concerns about data limitations in the future, as is in the present. Yet, it is precisely these human stories that have the potential to tease out the significance of what is likely to be an inflection point in history. The case featured in this paper is a creative rendition produced for a postgraduate class on reflective thinking. It aims to stir the imagination, provoking discussion on what we, as humble learners, need to understand when considering crises and communicating our perceptions and personal experiences across time and cultures. It also exposes the fragility of data and the limitations of temporally-bound interpretations, which insights derived from fragmented data entail.
